We were asked to maximise the value of a 1930’s detached property on a large prime site in Heswall, which has far reaching views across The Dee estuary to Wales. In doing so, we secured planning approval for a complex of 5 apartments which had been purchased by a developer and is currently on site.
The scheme provides a new two storey house on land in Lower Heswall. The site has fantastic views over the River Dee towards Wales and the design of the house maximises this feature by placing the main living accommodation upstairs.
The site slopes and we have used this feature to partially bury the ground floor so that access to the rear garden is at the same level as the main living accommodation at first floor.
The house contains three bedrooms, an open plan living space with kitchen and dining areas, a cinema room and a study in the loft space over the master bedroom.
Materials are restrained to a simple palette of through coloured render and clay tiled roof. Windows are PPC aluminium and a wood burning stove is used to heat the house. Insulation levels are greatly enhanced but stop short of passivhaus levels.

This project was designed to sit on a building plot that already had planning approval for a small apartment development. The brief was to create 4 large semi-detached houses that reflected the character of the surrounding residential area. The resulting scheme takes its references from the large Edwardian houses in the vicinity and utilises traditional detailing for gables, windows and bays. Chimney stacks are used to add character and the proportions of the elevations are carefully considered, using the Golden Section to ensure a harmonious feel.
Materials were all chosen to blend seamlessly with the area and are all sourced from within a 35 mile radius to cut down on carbon emissions during transportation.

We were approached by the owners of a tired bungalow in Lower Heswall to design a contemporary replacement dwelling on part of their existing garden and to provide a development plot that they could sell. We designed an energy efficient home with open plan first floor living accommodation and ground floor bedrooms. The rear elevation has extensive glass elements which flood the living space with natural light and allow access onto the raised balcony overlooking the garden. The windows in the front elevation are modest in comparison to provide a degree of privacy from the road.

We were asked to help with the extension and refurbishment of a Grade II listed pub in Erbistock, North Wales. The new owners required better kitchen facilities, toilet facilities, a centralised bar area and they also asked us to open the building up in order to make it feel like one space, rather than a series of disconnected rooms, whilst maintaining the history and charm of the building.
This was a challenging project and we worked closely with the client, heritage consultant and local authority conservation officer to extend the property at the rear to provide a modern kitchen, toilet facilities and hard landscaping of the existing quarry. The main focus of our design was to conserve and enhance the existing period features, whilst providing a warm and inviting interior that flows well for both staff and customers.

The project looks at the Partial Demolition, extension and conversion of an existing the pub/restaurant and adjacent B&B accommodation block into 4 residential dwellings. The proposals have been sensitively designed to retain the important historic appearance of the core building and provide replacement accommodation which complements the original vernacular and creates a unified architectural composition which appears at home within the landscape.
Natural stone is used in all main facades, with stone tiles being used for roofs. The new single storey outriggers to two of the units are finished in off white render to help distinguish between each dwelling whilst providing visual interest and emphasising the archaeology of each distinct building phase. This distinction between all phases of the buildings construction is important in continuing the buildings story.
The building layouts are largely predetermined, however the site has been redesigned to provide a layout which adapts the existing features, such as access and planting to create four attractive and practical residential curtilages. Each house has a private garden immediately adjacent, with nearby storage for cycles, bins and utility equipment. Each house has its own detached garage which have been grouped close together, near to the existing buildings and against the background of the conifer tree plantation to minimise their prominence.

Nearing completion this scheme re-imagines an existing 1960's detached property. The original house was a good size, but had a number of dark disconnected ground floor rooms. The client wanted all areas of the house to be utilised on a daily basis, rather than having rooms that were only used for family gatherings, so the solution was an open plan concept to the rear of the property to improve the flow. We also opened up the back of the house to the garden, by creating a family living space in a new single storey extension and used picture windows to the kitchen, lounge and extension to flood the centre of the house with as much light as possible.
Outside the house was improved with a palette of contemporary materials, including through colour render, aluminium windows, thin profile fibre cement roofing tiles and larch cladding. The scheme includes a contemporary garden 'shed' which will be used as a home office.

For this project we were asked to designed a modern four bedroom family home, to replace a small, tired bungalow. The site in Lower Heswall on the Wirral has outstanding views across the Dee Estuary to wales.
We wanted to reduce the impact of the new house from the road and surrounding buildings, so utilised the existing slope of the plot to create a split level design. By excavating extensively at the rear of the property, we increased the living space available by incorporating a lower ground floor into the design, which is to be used as a lounge area that opens up onto the garden.
The main kitchen and family living space are on the upper ground floor which has a spectacular view point across the Dee.
This scheme, currently under construction consists of 396 student bedroom spaces in 77 flat clusters in a 13 storey building. The site is located in Liverpool City Centre adjacent to University campuses.
The project is clad with Rockclad cladding, facing brick and curtain walling to ground floor communal areas. The external appearance of the building is designed to look like two separate and distinct buildings.
The more prominent ‘slab’ part of the scheme is clad in a lighter colour and has a regular two storey fenestration pattern. The ‘tower’ element is set back from the main façade and is clad with a dark grey cladding. Windows appear more random and the glazed feature on the corner is designed to be read as one glazed space. The ‘tower’ is all about lightness and transparency whilst the ‘slab’ conveys solidity and strength.
Each bedroom has ensuite bathroom facilities whilst residents will enjoy the use of a dedicated gymnasium, hi tech laundry, private garden space, student lounge and games areas. The city centre location will make it a sought after development for new residents.

The project includes the demolition of the former Hurstwoods International Ltd food processing factory, offices and associated buildings on site, and subsequent construction of four residential blocks comprising 111 apartments.
The style and form of the proposed apartment complex is a direct response to the site’s context. The immediate surroundings are characterized by a mixture of both new and old residential buildings with varying heights and materiality. The varied use of red-multi brick, render and sweet chestnut cladding in the proposed elevations along with the varying scale of the four buildings are designed to reflect this context.
The contemporary style challenges the traditional expectation of developer housing and reflects the 21st century standards that the client intends to provide. The gabled style of Blocks B and C also provides a contemporary take on the Victorian properties which are dotted around in the surrounding streets.
The density of development on the site has been influenced by a variety of factors, including consideration of the mass and height of each individual block in the development taken in context with the surrounding dwellings and residential blocks, and also economic factors affecting the overall financial viability of the scheme.
Overall, the development contains 111 apartments of varying sizes across the four blocks.

This scheme brought back into use a prominent building in the heart of Heswall, Wirral. The existing building was constructed as a Co-op in the 1950’s and had been empty since 2006 when Kwik Save vacated the premises.
The building was subdivided into a number of smaller retail units and the external elevations were redesigned to soften the corner and create a distinctive, contemporary but not overstated building. It integrates the units on the corner of Telegraph Road and The Mount and uses sympathetic materials. The natural red sandstone of the piers and fins reflects the traditional local use of sandstone, especially the sawn sandstone in Lloyds Bank (Grade ll Listed) on the other side of The Mount. The green cladding matches the green slate cladding at roof and first floor level on the adjacent Castle Buildings.

This domestic scheme consists of extension and refurbishment to a Georgian, detached family home in Hoylake. The house is located in a beachfront location, part of the Kings Gap Conservation Area. The design has been driven by maximizing the views to the waterfront and Hilbre island and orientating the key family spaces towards the views. The new plan rationalizes the spaces around the kitchen which provides a more efficient space and route through the house. The façade treatment differs between the two zones of the extension. Floor to ceiling glass is used in the new family room and the smaller, playroom is a solid form with a feature box window creating a window seat and play opportunity.
